Let’s learn about baby first aid

FIRST AID: CHOKING

Watch this great video by CPR KIDs on ways to prevent choking and provide first aid:

NOTE:

Babies and young children can choke on anything smaller than a D-size battery (6cm x 3.5cm).

To prevent choking:

  • keep small objects out of reach

  • cut up food into small pieces

  • supervise children while they’re eating, especially if they’re under five years.

FIRST AID: POISONING

  • Keep all medicines locked away or high up out of reach and sight.

  • Keep cleaning products high up out of reach. If this is not possible, put safety catches on low cupboard doors.

  • Make sure bottle tops and lids are closed when not in use. Always store chemicals in their original containers.

  • Keep button batteries out of reach. These are the most common reason that children go to hospital for poisoning. If swallowed, it can burn through the oesophagus (swallowing tube) in just two hours, causing internal burns, severe bleeding or death.

Poison Information centre:

13 11 26 offers free medical advice 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week.

Do you have the Poison Information Centre phone number on your mobile phone or near your home phone?

FIRST AID: BURNS

  • Burns and scalds are one of the main kinds of injury for children aged 0-4 years. They are one of the main reasons that children with an injury go to hospital.

  • Most burns happen at home

  • Scalds often happen when a parent or carer has a hot drink and the child is nearby or in the adult’s arms
